The spec
316L is the steel of surgical instruments and watch cases. It carries two to three percent molybdenum, the element that resists salt, and sweat is salt water. Titanium nitride is the coating on cutting tools and watch cases: about 2,000 on the Vickers scale, against about 200 for the steel under it and about 150 for 18K gold. It is the layer that takes the wear. The gold on top carries the color.

How it is made
Three factories.About sixty days.
We make one chain, in two widths and four lengths. Each production run takes about sixty days.
The chain, the clasp and the plating are each made at a different factory, so none of them decides what is good enough.
Most of the production time goes into the curvature and the construction of the links. That is slow work in 316L steel, which is harder to shape than gold.
Ground flat under coolant, then coiled off the wheel. Steel, before the gold goes on.
Finding the right plating factory took the longest. A materials scientist works on the coating with us: half a micron of titanium nitride goes on in a vacuum chamber, then the gold. It is the same coating that gives a drill bit its gold color, put there for wear.
This is what the sixty days are for.

A clasp has one job: stay shut while you wear it. We tightened the fit inside ours to help it stay that way.
